2011 CARILLON COMPOSITION COMPETITION

The Carillon Society of Australia Inc and the Wesley Music Foundation proudly present, as a joint venture, a competition for a Solo Carillon Work suitable for the National Carillon Canberra and the Sydney University War Memorial Carillon.

Announcing the winners of

Inaugural Student Carillon Composition

A Joint Venture: Carillon Society of Australia Inc. and

Wesley Music Foundation (ACT)

Twenty entries were received for the Student Carillon Composition Competition. Entries came from NSW (14) and the ACT (6). The standard of the entries was high with interesting new works presented. Three students, from the ACT were successful. The winners are as follows:


FIRST PRIZE (NCA Chairman’s Award $2,000): Leonard Wiess “The Bells of Nyx”.

Leonard is a first-year Composition Student at the Australian National University


SECOND PRIZE (Wesley Music Foundation $1,000): Ella Macens “The Transfixed Walls”

Ella is currently studying for a Bachelor of Music (Composition) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.


THIRD PRIZE (Carillon Society of Australia $500): Austin Har “the Devil’s Merry-Go-Round”

In 2010, Austin was accepted into Sydney Conservatorium of Music as a composition major.


HIGHLY COMMENDED: Stephen Lalor “Kala Kala”

Stephen is currently undertaking a PhD in Composition at the University of Sydney.


HIGHLY COMMENDED: Justin Skinner “Eolia”

Justin is currently studying composition at the Sydney Conservatorium.


COMMENDED: Bradley Kunda. “Luminos”.

Bradley completed a bachelor degree in music with first class honours under the notable Australian guitarist Tim Kain, while also studying for a bachelor degree in law. Bradley is currently a PhD candidate in guitar performance at the Australian National University.


COMMENDED: Ben Herbert “Waiting for the Rain”

Ben is a student of composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.


COMMENDED: Daniel Riley “Resonances”

Daniel is currently studying composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.


The Carillon society of Australia plans to publish an Anthology of the successful compositions. Two additional pieces have been chosen to be included and they are as follows:


Royce Davies: “Ardent Shade”

Royce is currently a first year composition Student at the Australian National University.


Virginia Botha: “Warm Haze”

Virginia is a first-year composition student at the Sydney Conservatorium


The competition provided an opportunity to advance the art of composition for the carillon and carillon culture in Australia. The challenge has been met with enthusiasm, talent and energy from the young student entrants. They have been well supported by their teachers (Jim Cotter ANU) and (Matthew Hindson Sydney) and found it interesting and very different to write for this unique instrument.


Do not miss the exciting Carillon Recital on Saturday 26th November at 2.00pm Aspen Island featuring the successful competition entrants. Come along and make your “Audience Choice” vote at the conclusion of the recital. An awards ceremony follows the November Canberra Recital on Saturday 26th at 4:00PM. It will be held at the Wesley Music Centre


The winning compositions will also be presented at a recital at the Sydney University War Memorial Carillon on Sunday December 4 @ 2:00PM.
